Mechanical Design Engineering Manager, Automated Test Equipment, Manufacturing Test Engineering Job Category: Manufacturing Test Engineering Location: [Location] Req. ID: 238710 Job Type: Full-time What to Expect We are seeking a highly motivated Lead Mechanical Engineer to join our manufacturing test engineering organization, driving the development of data-driven production testing equipment for Tesla’s power electronics across vehicles, energy storage, and charging products. This role is a critical part of the machine that builds the machine, requiring a strong technical contributor who can both execute and lead—balancing hands-on engineering work with guiding a small, high-performing team. The ideal candidate thrives on solving complex challenges, optimizing manufacturing processes, and mentoring others, all while delivering innovative solutions that improve efficiency and reliability. We’re looking for a problem solver with strong analytical skills, exceptional organization, and keen attention to detail. You should be comfortable with leadership responsibilities, driving key initiatives, and fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. This is an opportunity to take ownership, grow your impact, and shape the future of Tesla’s manufacturing test engineering team. What You’ll Do Architect automated test equipment, produce detailed-level CAD models, pneumatic diagrams, and verify designs using structural and thermal FEA and CFD. Lead conceptual equipment development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits. Review, identify, and provide feedback on performance, design simplicity, robustness, assembly, and installation. Analyze system constraints and propose innovative solutions. Support building, debugging, validation and equipment duplication efforts, and fine-tune equipment for release to production. Conduct detailed testing and validation of installed machinery to ensure robustness and quality. Perform on-site and off-site acceptance testing (SAT/FAT) of test equipment. Mentor junior mechanical engineers to deliver high-quality automation equipment. What You’ll Bring 8+ years of experience in mechanical, mechatronics, or automation engineering with expertise in automation, machine design, robotics, and product development. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience. Proven ability to transition products and processes from prototype to production. Strong knowledge of solid mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, material selection, prototyping, testing methods, machining, and fabrication. Hands-on experience with test systems, production machinery, and industrial sensors such as pogo-pins, pressure transducers, temperature controllers, and current meters. Skilled in SolidWorks, PDM, Ansys, or similar CAD/CAE software, with experience preparing technical requirements for automated equipment. Strong leadership, collaboration, and mentoring experience, with project management skills and willingness to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally.
