This full-time role offers the opportunity to work various shifts (Day/Night) and FTEs, providing specialized nursing care to adult and geriatric patients who have acute medical illnesses complicated by psychiatric or behavioral health conditions. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of acute care nursing experience, a strong interest in or experience with mental health, and a commitment to patient safety, evidence-based practice, and collaborative, holistic care. Key Details: Unit Focus: General Medicine unit providing care for patients with acute medical conditions and co-occurring psychiatric/behavioral health needs. Schedule: Full-Time; Multiple shifts available (Day and Night, likely 8 or 12-hour shifts). Various FTE options (e.g., 0.6 - 0.9 FTE). Experience Required: Minimum 1 year of nursing experience in an acute care setting. Licensure/Certifications: Active Washington RN License and BLS (AHA) required upon hire. Key Responsibilities: Clinical Practice & Patient Management (Nursing Professional Practice): Perform comprehensive nursing assessments, including both physical and mental status examinations, for patients with co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions. Identify appropriate nursing diagnoses, develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans that address both medical and behavioral health needs in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Safely administer medications for both medical and psychiatric conditions, monitoring for therapeutic effects, side effects, and potential interactions. Implement de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies as needed, ensuring a safe environment for patients and staff. Monitor, accurately record, and effectively communicate patient conditions, changes, and responses to treatment to the healthcare team. Perform and maintain currency in essential nursing competencies specific to the MedSurg Psych patient population. Patient Advocacy (Advocates): Effectively advocate for ethical and holistic care, partnering in care planning to promote the autonomy, dignity, rights, values, and beliefs of patients, particularly those with dual diagnoses. Education & Learning Facilitation (Facilitates Learning): Foster a supportive learning environment for patients and their families, providing education on medical conditions, mental health management, coping strategies, medications, and discharge planning. Contribute to the learning of nursing colleagues, other healthcare team members, and students. Safety, Quality & Evidence-Based Practice (Aligns Practice with Safety and Quality): Maintain accountability for patient safety, including implementing measures to address behavioral risks, fall prevention, and medical complications. Proactively identify and correct potential problems, integrating evidence-based practices and research into nursing care for patients with co-occurring disorders. Align patient safety, self-safety, and environmental safety as equally important for achieving the best outcomes. Professional Growth & Leadership (Engages in Professional Development & Leads in the Practice Setting): Engage in ongoing professional development and practice to the full scope of licensure within the legal parameters of the Nurse Practice Act, ANA Code of Ethics, and specialty nursing standards (e.g., medical-surgical, psychiatric-mental health nursing). Promote a culture of inquiry that explores, integrates, and disseminates research and evidence-based practices relevant to MedSurg Psych care. Collaborate effectively with physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other members of the inter-professional care team. Model professional behaviors as a representative of the nursing profession. Required Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited nursing program (ADN, Diploma, or BSN). Current, unrestricted Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) License upon hire. Current National Provider BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association upon hire. Minimum of one (1) year of nursing experience in an acute care setting. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). National Certification in a relevant area of specialty (e.g., Medical-Surgical Nursing - CMSRN, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing - PMH-BC) upon hire or willingness to obtain. Prior experience working on a dedicated medical-psychiatric unit or extensive experience caring for patients with co-occurring medical and behavioral health conditions.
