Job Description

Student Internship – Product Development Team (Mechanical & Manufacturing Focus)

Location: Xico Lighting, Woburn, MA

At Xico Lighting, a division of Fusion Optix, we believe great lighting doesn’t just illuminate spaces — it elevates experiences. We bring together cutting-edge engineering, sophisticated design, and human-centered innovation to create architectural lighting solutions that inspire. We’re offering a unique Student Internship opportunity on our Product Development Team — designed specifically for students studying mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, and industrial design who want to apply their skills in a dynamic, real-world setting.

About the Role:

This is not a coffee-fetching internship — this is your chance to roll up your sleeves and help shape the future of light. You’ll work alongside Fusion Optix’s "Bright Minds" — a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, and innovators — to bring new product ideas to life. You’ll gain hands-on experience across the full development process, from concept sketch to prototype to production.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work on the design and development of precision-engineered lighting products.
  • Assist in creating CAD models, mechanical drawings, and prototype components.
  • Support manufacturing process development, including material selection, DFM (Design for Manufacturing), and assembly testing.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions to contribute ideas for mechanical solutions and product improvements.
  • Help test and evaluate prototypes for performance, durability, and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with engineers, industrial designers, and production teams to bridge the gap between concept and production.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or industrial design (or a related discipline).
  • Strong interest in product development, precision engineering, and manufacturability.
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar).
  • Hands-on skills: prototyping, 3D printing, machining, or working with tools and materials.
  • Curiosity, creativity, and the ability to work in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.

What You’ll Gain:

  • A front-row seat in a real-world product development team.
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers and designers eager to help you grow.
  • Exposure to the latest in lighting technology, manufacturing processes, and product innovation.
  • A portfolio of meaningful work that showcases your technical and creative contributions.
  • An unforgettable experience working with an industry leader in lighting, where precision meets creativity.

To Apply: Please send a short note or cover letter along with your application telling us a bit about yourself, your interests, and what you’re excited to bring to the team. We can’t wait to hear from you!
